Nearly 95 per cent of B.C. children immunized against measles: province

Nearly all school-age children in BC have been immunized against measles, as the province continues to step up efforts to remind parents to vaccinate their children.

Nearly 16,000 kids, around 95 per cent, have been received at least one shot, according to Health Minister Adrian Dix.

“That doesn’t mean we’re close to our goal. We have a long way to go because we have to bring the people with one dose up to two, and we have to reconcile the 46,000 students for which we currently have no records,” Dix said Tuesday.

Since the catch-up program was launched in April, Dix says 566,000 student health records have been reviewed and approximately 87.6 per cent have recieved the full immunization. Starting in September, all schools will have to register which students are immunized.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control issued a public warning last week after an infant with the highly infectious and airborne disease flew through Vancouver International Airport on June 9.
