RCMP arrests three men, seizes gun outside Burnaby elementary school

Three people were arrested and a loaded handgun seized by police during a bust outside an elementary school in Burnaby Tuesday night

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Three people have been arrested and a loaded handgun has been seized by police following a bust outside an elementary school in Burnaby Tuesday night.

The RCMP says officers took the suspects into custody after 7 p.m. on June 18 at Cameron Elementary School, just west of Lougheed Mall, after someone spotted up to three men handing a gun back and forth in a car.

Police still aren’t sure how they got the firearm but say it’s illegal, and they have no idea what the trio was planning to do with it.

The school was closed at the time, but the RCMP, Transit Police and police dog unit cleared the grounds to prevent anyone from getting caught in the middle of the bust.

In dramatic video of the arrest obtained by NEWS 1130, the suspects are taken into custody after crawling across the parking lot on their knees with their hands in the air.

The vehicle is then searched by a police dog. Lorne Greene, who took the video, says it happened at around 7:35 p.m.

None of those arrested were previously known to police, the RCMP says. The investigation is ongoing.

Police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage of what happened to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.
