MPs approach Trans Mountain approval differently in B.C. and Alberta

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – With the approval of the Trans Mountain pipeline, MPs in B.C. and Alberta will likely be using different tactics when trying to to get your vote for the upcoming federal election.

Vancouver MP Joyce Murray says environmentalists in B.C. may see this expansion is a betrayal of a path to a greener future.

She’ll be pointing out there are dozens of climate change initiatives tied to the project including the commitment to invest every dollar earned from the pipeline to green energy.

“If there is a different government after the next election, there will not be that commitment to climate action that they see today,” says Murray.

But in Alberta, MPs say they’re happy to talk about the pipeline.

Edmonton Liberal MP Randy Boissonnault says that getting shovels into the ground in the next few months is an easy sell.

“There are people in my riding who are, it’s very straight-up vote trading,” says Boissonnault. “They’re like, ‘You get us a pipeline and I vote for you.'”

The government purchased the pipeline for more than $4 billion.

Canadians will head to the poll this October.
