LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) – Longtime Langley-Aldergrove MP Mark Warawa has passed away.

Announcing his death on Facebook and Twitter, Warawa’s family says the 69-year-old passed away Thursday morning. He had only recently announced he was battling pancreatic cancer.

“Mark’s final statement to his constituents was, ‘It’s been an incredible honour to have served my community since being elected federally in 2004,'” says part of the Facebook post.

First elected as an MP in 2004 as a Conservative, Warawa was also a former city councillor in Abbotsford having served from 1990 to 2004.

Tributes have been pouring in following news of his death.

Conservative leader Andrew Scheer calls Warawa “an example to which all Parliamentarians should aspire, and a strong defender of his principles.”

The NDP’s Charlie Angus says he spoke with Warawa many times over the years and says he had a deep faith and belief that people could do better.

A book of condolence is available for signing at his office on 222nd Street in Langley. In lieu of flowers, his family is asking donations be made to Gideons International, Hope for Women, Langley Hospice Society, or Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association.

Memorial service details will be announced after they have been finalized.
