SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Surrey’s Flamingo Hotel was demolished June 22, and the controlled explosion took some locals off guard.
The historic hotel, which opened in 1950s, was destroyed Saturday afternoon as part of a controlled demolition to make way for a residential build.
A caller to NEWS 1130 was at the intersection of King George and 108 at around 12:30 on Saturday afternoon. He said the frightening explosion had locals running out of shops and onto the street to see what had happened.
The hotel closed in February after the property was sold to a developer.
The private demolition party held to celebrate the hotel was expected to draw more than 500 people to watch.
