Some rain, some sun: A look at your long weekend forecast

Russ is all dressed up for your long weekend forecast!

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If your plans this long weekend are taking you outside of the Lower Mainland, you’ll want to pack some rain gear or sun glasses and sunscreen depending on where your trip takes you.

Meteorologist Russ Lacate says for parts of Metro Vancouver, the weather clears up after the downpours.

The region has seen quite a bit rain — in fact, Thursday’s 24 hour rainfall totals were the highest in more than two months.

Whistler

If your plans take you to the Whistler area this weekend, Russ says you can expect cool and unsettled conditions for the first half of the long weekend.

“There’s a good chance for leftover showers and an outside chance of a thundershower today, tonight, even into Saturday, before things settle down and turn sunnier on Sunday and right into the 1st of July too,” he says.

Okanagan

Heading to the southern Interior? Russ says you’ll want to pack an umbrella!

“It’ll be localized downpours associated with those passing thunderstorms again today and tonight across the Okanagan and the neighbouring regions of the southern Interior,” he explains. “Even a pretty high probability of showers spilling over into your Saturday forecast.”

Things are looking a little brighter later in the weekend, though. Russ says if you stick it out, you should catch some sunshine through Sunday and the holiday Monday.

Vancouver Island

If your long weekend sees you taking a ferry to Vancouver Island, it’ll be a mixed bag weather-wise.

“The Island got the rain it really needed yesterday, and even today some ominous dark clouds along your ferry routes,” Russ says. “But it really begins to clear up nicely Saturday afternoon, and you should be just about in the clear for Sunday. Maybe we’ve even got a friendly, sunnier forecast in your sights for Canada Day.”

Keep in mind — there’s one fewer ferry running between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale this long weekend, after the Queen of Coquitlam was pulled from service on Wednesday. BC Ferries has decided not to replace it, but is adding some sailings to other vessels as well as three water taxis along the route.

Seattle

If you’d rather spend Canada Day south of the border, Russ says you’ll likely run into some drier weather.

“Right now it is cooler, it is wetter south of the border but it rapidly dries up heading into the long weekend. It starts to warm up too — I think we’ll get enough sunshine to push temperatures towards 25 degrees. That’s more so Sunday and right into the holiday Monday, too.”
