Celebrations across the country mark Canada’s 152nd birthday

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Red and white are the colours of the day as Canada marks its 152nd birthday, and celebrations across the country include messages of hope from B.C.’s Premier and the Prime Minister.

Saying “Canada is known for its dynamic beauty, diverse cultures and the people who have chosen to make this country their home,” Premier John Horgan is promising to correct historical wrongs against Indigenous Canadians.

He says improving the lives of Indigenous Canadians is important for “advancing reconciliation and understanding our common history” as we all work together to “create lasting change and a better future for everyone in B.C.”

Horgan is spending the day in his Vancouver Island riding of Langford-Juan de Fuca, and says this day gives us a chance to cherish our values of equality, inclusion and a welcoming spirit which unites us all.

In Ottawa, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offers a message of hope suggesting no challenge is too great if Canadians face it together.

“We’re an example to the world because of the way we treat each other. We’re neighbours helping neighbours,” he says.

He also did some pre-election campaigning, celebrating the U.S. government’s removal of trade tariffs that were in place this time last year.

“A wave of solidarity swept across the country. We put up a united front. We leaned on each other. We had each other’s backs and we didn’t get pushed around,” he said. “As of this May, 85 long term drinking water advisories have been lifted and 825-thousand people, including almost 300,000 kids, are no longer living in poverty in Canada.”

Ottawa’s celebration included a Snowbirds flypast.

Trudeau is not the only politician taking advantage of this day to do some pre-election campaigning.
