LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) – The latest winner in the NEWS 1130 Unsung Hero contest is Linda Bellamy of Langley. She was nominated by Muriel Blessin.

Linda is behind an effort at a local retirement home to crochet dozens of sleeping mats for the homeless out of plastic bags.

She got the idea after finding instructions online from a group in the U.S. — Grandmothers of Utah.

So far, she and her group have completed 40 six-by-three foot mats, which are being donated to Covenant House.

“For 13 years prior to this, Linda volunteered at Langley Gardens and that group knit seven inch squares that she then sewed into blankets for the homeless,” Muriel says. “Linda is a wife, mother and works full time, so her down-time is very precious to her and we really appreciate her thoughtfulness and generosity.”

Alpine Credits is acknowledging Linda with $500 and they’re also donating $1,000 to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.
