SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Getting a daycare spot can feel like winning the lottery, but what happens when that spot you have disappears because the daycare is being told they have to move?
That’s exactly what is happening to Growing Together Daycare in Surrey. Currently, they are located on Surrey School District property.
Janice Boyle is the director of development with the 33-year-old daycare. She says that the district wants to keep a daycare on the property, but under a different operator.
“We’re really struggling to understand why the school board has made this decision and would really love the opportunity to be able to work it out with them, but we have been rebuffed to this point,” says Boyle.
She is worried that new operators will not be up and running in time for the new school year, leaving many parents in trouble when it comes to finding quality child care.
“I can’t even imagine what it would be like, thinking that you have your child care plans worked out for the fall and then to find out that might not be the case and not knowing if you have enough notice to make a change,” she says.
Growing Together Daycare also offers many other services not common to daycare providers.
“It is full wraparound service for these young moms and occasionally young dad, helping them through learning how to parent, taking them to different appointments, helping them apply and get into housing. There’s a lot of staff and a lot of resources that we bring to bear on this program that are separate and over and above the child care,” says Boyle.
Boyle says while they have been actively looking for a new location, they want to remain in their current space until they have one settled.
The Surrey School District says the daycare will continue to operate throughout the summer, and facilities will be updated in time for September.
