VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) — Trade in your campfires and canoes–a new Vancouver summer camp is all about exploring drag culture.

Organizers say they’ve had participants ranging from zero to 80 years old.

Dank Sinatra, a performer, is pleasantly surprised at the the people taking part.

“The parents being here is actually the thing I was most surprised by and I think the best part of this camp. Because the entire family then gets involved. The parents are being educated as well as the children I think its important for parents to be showing up and supporting their kids.”

Organizer Candie Tanaka says the camp creates a safe space for those in the LGBTQ community and teaches others to be more accepting of diversity.

“I just think it’s more important that youth have a place where they can associate with other queer youth, and even queer youth that are interested in doing drag. To just have a space where they feel safe I think is really important,” Tanaka says.

The camp offers workshops in costume design, makeup, performance and history.

It kicked off in April and will finish later in July.
