Hong Kong administration ends push for extradition bill with China

HONG KONG (NEWS 1130) – Calling it a total failure, Hong Kong’s leader announced that a bill about extradition, which forced thousands of protesters into the streets, is now finally dead.

Carrie Lam made the announcement at a press conference, saying there is no plan to restart the legislation.

“We will adopt a new governance style in order to ensure that we are able and capable of listening to views from different sectors before we implement policies,” said Lam.

When the bill was announced, hundreds of thousands of people engaged in days of protests.

Many of the protesters said their anger was directed at the bill’s ending of the “one country, two systems” framework with China that allows Hong Kong some legislative autonomy.

Lam acknowledged she was not sure if this would satisfy the protesters.
