New phone scam posing as City of Langley survey

LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) – Langley RCMP are warning people of a new phone scam that is posing as a survey for the City.

Scammers are calling people with a fake survey to get personal information over the phone. Phone displays show “Langley City” as the caller.

RCMP says Langley is not currently conducting a survey.

The police have released a list of ways on how people can protect themselves so they do not become victims of a scam.

– Spot imposters. Scammers may try to pretend to be in a position of trust, such as a family member, government official or company you do business with.

– Search online. Search companies or products with words such as “review,” “complaint” or “scam.”

– Do not pay upfront.

– Consider how you pay. Credit cards have significant fraud protection built into them, but other payment methods may not.

– Talk to people. Before you give money or personal information, talk to people you know and trust for advice.

– Hang up on robocalls.

– Treat free trials with skepticism. Many free trials want you to sign up and then charge you monthly until you cancel.

– Do not deposit a cheque and wire money back. Banks have to make funds available from cheques within days of deposit, but uncovering a fraudulent one can take much longer.

– Report scams to agencies such as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
