Parts of Mundy Park closed as black bear family roams

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – A black bear and her two cubs are getting evicted from Mundy Park in Coquitlam after helping themselves to treats left in unattended picnic baskets and backpacks.

Traps have been set and some areas of the park are closed. Conservation officers are hoping to capture the bears humanely and safely relocate them.

Amiee Mclean, who walks her dog in the park every day with her toddler, says she’s encountered the family twice and has no problem sharing this space with them.

“I didn’t even know that they were going to trap the bears, but I know it’s because they’re getting a lot of reports of them and there’s quite a few in the park and they are on the trails and stuff like that,” she told NEWS 1130.

“The one yesterday came like right out on the trail in front of us and there was a bunch of other people there with little dogs and as soon as we started making noise and the dogs started barking it kind of sauntered off back into the woods.”

As conservation officers look for the bears, they’re reminding human visitors to stop leaving food unattended.
