BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – A 71-year-old dubbed the “protesting grandpa” has been arrested after trying to climb a barge at the Trans Mountain pipeline Westridge Terminal.
Terry Christenson was apparently brought into custody by RCMP Wednesday morning while trying to scale a construction crane to hang a banner that reads “No Tankers.”
This isn’t his first run-in with Mounties at the Burnaby terminal.

In April, the self-described professional climber was arrested after spending 34 hours in a tree at the western end of the Trans Mountain pipeline in Burnaby. In March of last year, he climbed a tree in the same area to slow clearing the tree clearing for pipeline construction. That protest lasted 16 hours before he was removed.
“When the federal government re-approved the Trans Mountain Pipeline, they knew the protesters would come. My goal today was to send a message loud and clear: This pipeline is a disaster in waiting,” Christenson said in a news release.
“A tanker spill would devastate the coast of British Columbia, and would especially harm those who depend upon a healthy Salish Sea for their livelihoods. I’m calling on everyone to live up to their moral duty to ensure a safe, livable future for our grandchildren and speak up or step up in whatever ways they can to help stop this pipeline.”
Christenson was expected to have a court appearance today.
