Several families displaced after explosion at Richmond apartment complex

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – A gas explosion has rocked an apartment complex near Steveston, damaging several suites and leaving multiple families without a home.

Richmond Fire Department deputy Jim Wishlove says no one was hurt in the explosion on No. 2 Rd south of Andrews Rd early this afternoon, but several apartments were damaged by smoke and water.

“The crews are investigating what happened,” he said. “They recognize that there had been some work being performed on some of the natural gas fireplaces in the building and potentially that could have created the issue which caused the gas explosion.”

Ryan Pineo lives in an apartment in the same complex and was working from home when it happened.

“I kinda thought it was just a bulldozer or a car crash or construction, you know what I mean, and then I went outside, I heard all of the sprinklers running down and saw a fireman climbing up the ladder,” he told NEWS 1130.

Several families won’t be able to return to their homes tonight, while others will be able to return when the sprinkler system and fire alarms are fixed.
