COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – RCMP are investigating after two different cars went up in flames in the area of Riverside and Rivergate Drive in Port Coquitlam overnight.

At around 3:30 Thursday morning Coquiltam RCMP and Coquitlam Fire Department were called to the scene, and found the two cars on fire.

Fire Chief Nick Delmonico says it’s not a common sight, adding RCMP have deemed the incident suspicious.

“There were two cars on fire, which was a little unusual. We get a lot of car fires, but generally not two at a time so it was deemed suspicious in nature by our crews,” Delmonico says. “RCMP did attend and its now under them, they’re doing an arson investigation on it.”

He says his own fire investigators won’t be looking in to the fire, and the case if now being led by RCMP.

“Our investigators didn’t attend the call, it was handed off to RCMP right away. So, we don’t have any investigative information on it.”

Witnesses and surveillance video show the fires were sparked by thieves who were trying to steal catalytic converter. Police are looking for four men in a dark, older-model sedan seen driving away from the area.

One of the men is being described as tall, lanky and wearing a grey hoodie, and was also spotted wearing a headlamp.

RCMP continue to investigate if this incident is related to any other catalytic converter thefts in the area.
