Washington AG opens inquiry into NRA’s financial affairs

WASHINGTON — The attorney general for Washington D.C. has issued subpoenas to the National Rifle Association and its related charitable foundation as part of an investigation into allegations of financial misconduct inside the powerful lobbying organization.

The subpoenas add to a host of difficulties for the gun-rights group, which is facing internal turmoil and multiple external investigations as it gears up for a 2020 push in favour of incumbent President Donald Trump.

Oliver North was denied a second term as NRA president this past spring as internal disputes spilled out into public view just before the organization’s annual meeting. North has accused CEO Wayne LaPierre of wasteful spending, prompting calls for transparency from rank and file members

The New York attorney general’s office and the Senate Finance Committee are conducting parallel investigations.
