Salmon Arm city councillor speaking out against new bylaw targeting panhandlers

SALMON ARM (NEWS 1130) – A city councillor in British Columbia’s Southern Interior region is speaking out against a new bylaw targeting panhandlers.

Earlier this week, city council in Salmon Arm beefed up an existing bylaw put in place in May by adding a $50 fine for panhandling on streets and sidewalks.

The May bylaw made panhandling near a bank machine, at a public plaza and curbside an offence.

Sylvia Lindgren was the only councillor to vote against the fine, and says there are better ways to solve the panhandling problem including more subsidized housing and access to services.

Kelowna and Penticton also have bylaws with fines for panhandlers.
