Part of Victoria airport evacuated after aerosol sunscreen makes it through security

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – An aerosol can of sunscreen that made it through a security check at Victoria’s airport on Saturday forced the evacuation of part of the airport, and all passengers back through screening.

Rod Hunchak with the Airport Authority says most people don’t even realize they may be carrying a prohibited item.

“Sometimes people just forget and have items in their bags,” he says. “It happens pretty much every day here when items are being screened that items are found. Most times people just aren’t remembering what they have in their bag.”

He says there is a full list of banned items available online.

“So best thing to do is check the CATSA website and on the CATSA website there is a list of prohibited items. It’s very clear and very descriptive on what is allowed and what isn’t allowed.”

Hunchak advises travellers to check with their airline or the airport website for updated flight information, but says most weren’t that upset about the delays.

“The key priority for both the airlines and ourselves is passenger safety, so people are very understanding. It’s unfortunate that their travel plans may be a bit inconvenienced.”

Some flights were delayed while passengers went through screening again.
