BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Police are asking for the public’s help after an alleged assault on Burnaby Mountain Trail on Sunday.

The Burnaby RCMP says a 19-year-old woman was walking on a trail near the Simon Fraser University campus just before 9 p.m. on July 14, when a man allegedly followed her and tried to engage her in conversation.

He is alleged to have grabbed her hand, but she was able to pull away and run to a nearby parking lot to get help. He followed her to the parking lot and continued to try to engage with her, but then left in a grey or black four door Acura.

In a press release, SFU said the man tried to pull the woman, “a female SFU community member,” into the bushes. It says the school is providing support to the person who was assaulted, and has increased security on campus.

Police are asking people to be vigilant while using the trails near SFU, particularly north of University Drive and West Campus Road on the way to Burnaby Mountain Park, and to contact police if they see anything suspicious.

The suspect is described as a South Asian man between 19 and 23 years old, clean shaven, with brown eyes and a black turban. He was wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt, grey sweat pants and black sandals, and is about 5’9.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
