BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – A 19-year-old man has been taken to hospital after a reported carjacking in Burnaby overnight.

Mounties were called to the area of Cardston Court near Government Street — south of Lougheed Highway — just after midnight on Monday.

According to a witness, the teenager was hauled out of a car by five people, before he and another passenger were attacked.

“I’m sitting in my car, having a cigarette, listening to music and waiting for my buddy to come home from work,” a witness, who asked not to be named, said. “The next thing you know, you hear these tires squeal and all of a sudden this ruckus. And I look through the mirror and five dudes jump out of this SUV, pull these two young kids out of the car, beat them up, and then steal their car, and then boot out of here like maniacs.”

The witness said the teenagers ran down the street to chase after their vehicle — described as a white Mazda 3.

“…and as they pass my car, I notice the one kid is stabbed like really bad — he’s gushing,” the witness described. “So I stop him and I go to my trunk and get a towel and I lay him down on the ground and put pressure on it and called 9-1-1.”

Mounties say the stolen vehicle has been recovered, and while they admit it’s still too early to say what the motive behind this incident may have been, they do believe it was targeted.

The victim is known to police.

At the time of the incident, half a dozen police cruisers were seen parked throughout the neighbourhood, which some have said is normally quite safe. Mounties have since cleared the scene.

The teenager’s injuries are non-life threatening.

Mounties are looking to speak with anyone who may have seen a dark-coloured SUV or the white 2004 Mazda 3 driving away from the scene when it took place.

You’re asked to call the Burnaby RCMP at 604.646.9999 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS if you have any information or dashcam video.
