Federal gov’t funding affordable housing in Whistler

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As Whistler struggles to provide affordable housing for people working there, the federal government says it’s providing funding for a new 24-unit affordable rental building.

The popular ski destination has had difficulty retaining employees, who often leave because of the area’s high cost of living.

At an announcement on July 15, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said the Canadian government is investing $7.3 million in the construction of a four-storey building that will include four studio, 13 one-bedroom, and seven two-bedroom units.

17 of those will offer rent at 30 per cent less than the area’s median household incomes, and the rent levels will be maintained for 50 years.

The Mayor of Whistler, Jack Crompton, Pamela Goldsmith-Jones, the local MP, and the minister responsible for the CMHC, Jean-Yves Duclos, were all present at the announcement.

The Whistler Housing Authority will manage the affordable housing units.
