CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Police in Calgary have a man in custody in connection with a brutal case of animal cruelty that neighbours say has left them traumatized. It happened overnight on Wednesday at an apartment building in the southeast community of Penbrooke Meadows.

“Witnesses claimed to observe a male beating a cat with a baseball bat,” said Duty Inspector Melanie Onescu. “The cat was deceased and the offender was taken into custody.”

One neighbour, who does not wish to be named, says she saw it happen while she was out on her deck.

“I saw the gentleman next door come out calling his kitty, and I just pointed out the kitty to him. And next thing I know the bat came down. I just got off that chair and I just ran over and screamed what are you doing?” she said. “I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. There was no way I could protect the cat.”

She says the cat was clearly in pain and she then ran into her home to call for help, though she was initially afraid to call 9-1-1.

“I was scared because we live right next door and he knew it was me. I called my sister right away and we talked, and she said it had to be done,” she said. “The worst thing. There’s no reason for that. There’s no reason. No reason. And it’s going to be a nightmare I’ll have for life.”

The man is facing several animal cruelty related charges.

Oncescu acknowledges it was a pretty upsetting scene for those who witnessed the attack.

“Always make sure that if you witness something like this or any other crime that is troublesome to make sure that you seek support,” he said.

Another neighbour said there are a lot of animal lovers in the complex, and they never want to see the attacker again.

“I love animals, and I think that’s disgusting. It is just disgusting. I’m just angry,” said Debbie, who lives nearby. “I hope he doesn’t come back. If he comes back, God help him.”
