Victoria police investigating multiple acts of racist graffiti

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – Victoria police are investigating an incident of racist graffiti scrawled outside the door of a local resident.

The graffiti was posted online by Delta MLA Ravi Kahlon, showing an anti-Semitic symbol that he says was outside a friend’s door on Wednesday morning in the city’s downtown area.

Acting Spokesperson Bowen Osoko with the Victoria Police Department says the force is aware of the incident and is investigating multiple similar cases.

“Instances of swastika and other hate-symbol graffiti are understandably concerning,” says Osoko in an email to NEWS 1130. “Both our hate crimes investigator and our graffiti investigator are aware of similar incidents in Victoria and Esquimalt.”

While most cases of graffiti do not involve hate-based symbols, he says there has been a significant increase over the past six months.

Osoko also says surveillance video that shows graffiti or other acts of vandalism being committed “is helpful to our investigations into these crimes.”

Anyone with information or surveillance footage of these incidents can call Victoria Police’s non-emergency line or report it online.
