Car caught driving down stairs in Downtown Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver Police are trying to figure out what exactly happened after bizarre video showing someone driving down a set of stairs outside a building in Downtown Vancouver surfaced online Friday afternoon.

The footage shows the driver pausing for a moment, opening the door of the silver SUV, looking around before getting back in and continuing to drive down the steps. People continue to walk on the sidewalk below as the car makes its jerky descent towards the busy street.

Vancouver Police Constable Steve Addison say they’re trying to figure out how the driver got themselves into this situation, but there appears to be something of a silver lining. “We are glad the driver decided to use her turn signal when she got to the bottom of the stairs and before re-entering the flow of traffic.”

The department’s Collision Investigation Unit has taken over the case and will be speaking to more than just the driver involved. “What they’ll be doing is they’ll be speaking to the driver, they’ll be talking to any witnesses and they’ll be speaking to any property representatives from the place where this did occur,” adds Addison.

He adds it’s unclear how much of a fine, if any, the driver would be given. “It could range anywhere from a bylaw or a Motor Vehicle Act ticket, which is provincial, to something more serious if there’s damage to the property, which could be mischief or failing to remain at the scene of an accident. All of that is going to depend on the outcome of the investigation and what facts we find about what happened.”

The video may have you giggling, but Addison says this situation could have turned ugly.

“People are going to make light of this incident for obvious reasons, but it’s important to remember that this appears to be the result of inattentiveness of the driver. It’s a busy city, there are a lot of pedestrians and cyclists and motorists and everybody is trying to get somewhere and we need everybody to do that safely. Road safety is a shared responsibility. If you look at the video, there’s pedestrians in the video, there are pedestrians walking around that vehicle, so it’s an unsafe situation. We’re grateful no one appears to have been injured in this situation and it really does come down to people needing to pay attention to where they’re going and being respectful of the people around them.”
