Crews douse fast-moving grass fire near Fort Langley

TOWNSHIP OF LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) – A fast-moving grass fire that shut down a portion of 88th Avenue near Fort Langley was put out thanks to some hard work from firefighters.

The blaze took about six hours to extinguish, and was sparked sometime Sunday afternoon.

“It was spreading faster than we could chase it in some cases,” District Chief Brian Ross with the Township of Langley said.

Twenty-five to 30 firefighters were called to the scene to help fight the blaze, which burned about six hectares of grass, Ross explained.

There’s still no word on what caused the fire.

“No damage to any structures — it was isolated to a large field,” Ross added. “Firefighters did an excellent job. They all worked really, really hard for a lot of hours. It was very hot, dry weather. Very hard work on their part.”

Crews faced a number of access problems, including marshy terrain.

“So we weren’t able to get the trucks close. We had to pull a lot of hose — thousands of feet of hose we had to pull,” Ross said.

With fire season in full swing, he is reminding everyone to be extra cautious, especially with smoking materials.
