Transit police gathering tips in potential hate crime investigation

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130- Tips are starting to come in to Transit Police following a possible hate crime on a Vancouver bus last weekend.

On Sunday evening on the 95 B-line bus, a woman was filmed yelling at a group of teens from Brazil who were speaking Portugese and telling them to “speak English” before hitting one of them in the face with a backpack.

The woman has not yet been identified, but Sergeant Clint Hampton says they’re trying to follow every lead.

“We have received tips, we are working hard to follow up on these tips. We can tell you we don’t have anyone in custody in relation to this.”

Hampton says officers have received more tips since video of the incident was shared on social media. He adds they are keeping in contact with the 17-year-old Portuguese victim who was hit in the face with a backpack.

“I believe she is still in Canada, so that line of communication is still open. In some circumstances we need additional information from them,” he says.

If you have information about what happened, please contact Transit Police by phone at 604-516-7419 or by text 877777.
