Kits Beach closed to swimmers because of high E.coli levels

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — If you’re planning on going for a swim today, you’re going to want to avoid Kitsilano Beach.

The beach is closed for swimmers because of high E.coli levels. The beach park, however, is still open.

According to Vancouver Coastal Health, samples taken Thursday found 2282 and 3448 most probable number E.coli per 100 milliliters. For comparison, samples taken at Sunset Beach, False Creek, and Third Beach earlier in the day on Thursday had less than 10 mpn/100 mls.

Trout Lake is also closed for swimming after high E.coli levels were recently found there as well.

The Vancouver Park Board passed a motion Monday asking the city to improve water quality at the city’s beaches. The board is asking that replacing the combined storm water and sewage runoffs that drain into the ocean be prioritized.
