IIO investigating after man drowns running from police near Hope

HOPE (NEWS 1130) – British Columbia’s police watchdog is investigating after a man ran from police, jumped into the Fraser River and drowned.

Investigators say RCMP officers were making arrests after four people were allegedly driving a stolen car near Hope on Tuesday.

The suspects ran away, but police were able to arrest three of them shortly after.

A fourth suspect went into the river and officers lost sight of him. On Friday, a body was pulled from the water in the Mission area, which is believed to the that of the fourth suspect.

The Independent Investigations Office, which looks at incidents in which people are injured interacting with police, is investigating.
