Trudeau promises to bring home two Canadians ‘arbitrarily detained’ in China

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – During his latest stop in Vancouver, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is again offering hope two Canadians locked up in China will be allowed to come home.
Trudeau’s comments come a few days after politicians on Capitol Hill condemned what they call the “abusive” imprisonment of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor in response to Canada’s detention of Meng Wanzhou.

“We are a government that has consistently stood up for Canadians in difficulty overseas. We will continue to advocate for Canadians who find themselves in difficulty and that includes the two Canadians who’ve been arbitrarily detained in China,” he said.
Trudeau adds that allies in the U.S., Europe and around the world are voicing similar concerns over the use of the law in this situation.
It’s been seven months since both men were detained in what’s believed to be retaliation for the arrest of the Huawei executive, wanted on fraud charges in the United States.

“We will continue to hope for a positive resolution on this, but we will continue to stand strongly and firmly in defence of the two Canadians who’ve been arbitrarily detained.”
The Prime Minister was speaking at an event marking the completion of multi-million dollar renovations at the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station which re-opened in 2016 after the base was shuttered by the former Conservative government in 2013.
