Burnaby fire captain’s daughter passes away after Abbotsford crash

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) — The daughter of a Burnaby Fire Captain has been taken off life support, making her the second casualty of an Abbotsford car crash.

Twenty-three-year-old Madeline Stroup was airlifted to hospital after two cars hit head-on in Abbotsford on July 26. The crash killed her boyfriend, Hayden Turcotte, and sent two others to hospital.

On Saturday, an update to the GoFundMe page set up for the family announced that she passed away in hospital.

“We are very heartbroken to announce that Madeline (Maddy) Stroup has succumbed to her devastating injuries caused from this horrific accident. Maddy fought very hard and up until the very end we all had hope and continued to pray that a miracle would pull her through.”

It adds that she made the decision to become an organ donor at age 16.

“So, as she did in her life, Maddy will continue to give to others, after her passing,” the page says.

Stroup comes from a “fire fighting family,” and firefighters set up the fundraising page to support the family.

The goal was $20,000 and as of Sunday the total amount raised is close to $40,000.

“Funds that have been raised from the kind, generous, donations will go towards hospital costs that have been incurred, counseling for the family, funeral expenses for both Maddy and her Boyfriend Hayden. There will also be a donation made to Honour House in New Westminster as they gave a home during this tragic and stressful time, a place which brought comfort for Maddy’s parents, her siblings and extended family,” the page says.

Madeline’s father is Burnaby Fire Captain Dean Stroup, her mother is Emergency Program officer for the Port Coquitlam Fire department, and her brother is a member of the Vancouver Fire Department.
