White Rock Pier set to re-open before end of summer

WHITE ROCK (NEWS 1130) — The iconic White Rock Pier is slated to reopen at the end of August.

The 104-year-old pier was ripped in half during a hurricane force storm in December. Repairs were estimated at about $16 million.

Councillor Helen Fathers says work is on track for the August 31 reopening.

“I think it’s the lifeblood of the community,” she says  “I think we’re all going to be thrilled as a community when it’s up and running”

She says the waterfront businesses will be relieved to once again enjoy the benefits of people taking a stroll along the pier.

“It’ll be a really good thing for the businesses to get visitors back to our waterfront,” she says.

While repairs were underway, the city made efforts to bolster business by offering free parking and organizing special events.

While the pier will be open to public use in time for the last long weekend of the summer, a new arch and lighting won’t be installed until late-October.
