VPD call for safe boating in finale of Celebration of Light finale

By

Vancouver (NEWS 1130) – It’s the final show tonight of the Celebration of Light and Croatia is getting ready to light up the sky, but Vancouver Police want to make sure people remain safe.

Sgt. Jason Robillard says people enjoying the show from the water should be mindful of their boating neighbours.

“Just looking at the amount of boats that we’ve had out in the harbour and English Bay, it is quite crowded at night,” he says. “So, I want everybody to make sure they’re adhering to safe boating practices.”

Robillard also says that rising tides on the shore mean people may have to move during the show.

“If you’re standing on rocks and you have a good view of the fireworks, the tide may rise.”

Even though the last two events didn’t bring in as many people as expected, he says the VPD is still prepared with scenarios that could play out.

“I would describe it as a well-oiled machine when we’re out there policing the event,” he says. “Every year it gets a little bit better and little bit better.

Vancouver Police want everyone to enjoy the fireworks but to be safe while doing so.
