Squamish man dies after falling on Stawamus Chief

SQUAMISH (NEWS 1130) – For a second time in six weeks, a climber has lost his life climbing the Stawamus Chief in Squamish.

First responders got a call Sunday morning about a climber who had fallen from the Angel Crest portion of the north face.

The climber was still alive when responders arrived, but he was about 300 metres up the face, and it was difficult for rescuers to get to him.

“After a difficult and highly technical extraction the man, a 33-year-old Squamish resident, went into medical distress and died a short time later” stated Sergeant Sascha Banks of Squamish RCMP. “The climbing community in Squamish is very close and I know it will be a hard loss for everyone. Our thoughts go out to not only the man’s friends and family but to the Squamish SAR team who worked tirelessly to help him.”

In late June, another climber was also killed on the Chief. He had plummeted 30 metres on the Grand Wall area.

The Squamish Search and Rescue unit has had to respond to three climbers in distress over the last three days.
