Witnesses describe chaotic chase, multiple collisions on HWY 99

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – One person has been arrested following what witnesses describe as a scary and chaotic scene along Highway 99 through Richmond and Delta this afternoon.

Mounties say at around 3:20 p.m., Deas Island Traffic Services, Delta Police and Richmond RCMP received multiple 911 calls about an erratic driver the highway.

A Dodge Ram pickup collided with a number of vehicles as its driver continued south on the highway before turning onto Highway 17 towards the ferry terminal.

Melissa Hasting says she first encountered the truck near Westminster Highway when the driver hit four vehicles on its way past the Steveston Highway exit.

“As I kept going, his wheel got lost before he got into the tunnel, so people had to swerve and go around it,” she says.

“He was heading towards the ferry terminal… he had three wheels so it was making a lot of noise. All of a sudden he went against the traffic, and all the cars were backing up and panicked, and he rammed a couple more cars.”

Hasting says the chase ended at 56th street and Highway 17 when the man got out of his truck and attempted to run into a field.

Police have yet to confirm many details, but say one man was arrested at 56th Ave and Highway 17 in Delta.

Other callers say police spike strips were deployed in that same area.

“It was very scary to see that happen, and unbelievable,” Hasting says.

At this point, there is no information to suggest anyone was seriously injured.

More information should be released tomorrow after police interview the suspect and witnesses.
