An emu had to be tasered after it was blocking traffic in Chemainus

RCMP and Coastal Animal Control worked together to secure the animal and return it to a nearby farm

CHEMAINUS, B.C. (NEWS 1130) – A routine morning patrol was anything but after Mounties in Chemainus had to taser an emu that was blocking traffic.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP found the emu on Chemainus Road, which had escaped from a nearby farm.

Police quickly decided the animal was a safety concern for passing pedestrians and drivers.

Coastal Animal Control was called to the scene to assist and attempts were made to calm the animal in order to safely remove it.

Mounties say the 100-pound emu was agitated and aggressive toward the officers. Along with Coastal Animal Control, they decided to stun the animal as the best way to minimize risk to human and bird alike.

The emu was secured by officers and transported safely to a nearby farm at the request of the emu’s owner.

It appeared to be uninjured from the incident.
