‘It’s so quiet here’: Workers in south Burnaby surprised after shooting leaves one person hurt

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – People arriving to work in an industrial area of south Burnaby were met with police tape Thursday morning following a shooting.

Mounties say a 25-year-old man was hurt when shots rang out at around 4:00 a.m. in the industrial area of Keith Avenue and Ivy Street.

“He is at the hospital being treated for his injuries,” Cpl. Daniela Panesar said. “He has injuries sustained from the shooting — the extent of those injures I do not know, they weren’t life threatening.”

While the investigation is still in its early stages, Mounties believe the shooting was targeted. No arrests have been made.

Meantime, the incident had some people who work in the area shaken.

“It’s so quiet here,” one person told NEWS 1130 when they arrived in the area for work, only to find a crime scene.

As investigators searched for evidence, workers said they couldn’t believe a shooting could take place in the area.

“It’s surprising,” a woman said. “First thing in the morning?”

Missed it by minutes

Mark, who is a baker nearby, told NEWS 1130 he arrived to work just minutes before the shooting took place.

“Very happy that I didn’t come five minutes, maybe, earlier, because I could have been a witness and could have got a bullet,” he said, adding he didn’t actually hear anything.

“Two police cruisers pulled in when I came in,” he explained. “They asked if I heard any ‘bangs’ around the neighbourhood, and I said no. They didn’t tell me anything, then later on I found out that somebody got shot.”

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information is available.
