Vehicle slams into house causing explosion in London, Ont.

LONDON, Ont. – A neighbourhood in southwestern Ontario has been rocked by a massive explosion after a car slammed into a house Wednesday night.

London police said the crash happened in the city just before 11 p.m.

It’s believed the vehicle hit a natural gas line, causing the explosion that destroyed several homes and forced the evacuation of many more.

“All of a sudden, I feel this huge rumble — I thought we were having an earthquake, then this huge explosion kind of sound,” one neighbour said.

“We thought it was a bomb blowing off,” another person in the neighbourhood said after a fireball shot up into the night sky.

Keara-Lynne Douglas, who lives nearby, described the flames engulfing homes. She said they appeared to be too strong for firefighters to extinguish at one point.

“It wasn’t dying out at all,” she recalled. “It brought everybody to tears. It was insane.”

London Police Const. Shayna Bolan said two officers were sent to hospital with minor injuries and two fire fighters were also in hospital being assessed.

The massive fire burned for several hours, and spread to a number of structures.

Boland said a female was taken into custody.

Investigators are expected to be on scene for several days, she added.
