Judge finds Manitoba Mountie not guilty of manslaughter

THOMPSON, Man. – A northern Manitoba Mountie has been found not guilty of manslaughter for an on-duty shooting that killed a drunk driver and injured a passenger.

The court heard there was a police chase before Const. Abram Letkeman T-boned a Jeep in 2015.

He got out to arrest the driver but the Jeep moved forward, and the officer fired 12 shots into the vehicle.

The judge did find the officer guilty of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

A sentencing hearing for that will be held later this year.

Campbell, who was 39, was hit at least nine times and his girlfriend was also injured.

Crown prosecutors argued that the officer made wrong and negligent choices leading up to the shooting death.

A defence lawyer said the officer thought his life was in danger because he was standing in front of the Jeep and it was moving toward him.
