Deep Cove closed to swimmers due to abnormally high E. Coli levels

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Deep Cove is closed to swimmers this weekend due to abnormally high E. coli levels.

Samples taken Thursday revealed levels of the bacteria present at more than 10 times the allowed amount of 400 E. coli/100 mL.

People can still kayak and stand-up paddle-board, but are being advised to wash their bodies with soap and water afterward to make sure bacteria is washed off.

Deep Cove is the only beach in the region currently closed to swimmers but a number of similar closures have taken place over the summer months.

In July, the Vancouver Park Board passed a motion asking the city to improve water quality at the city’s beaches. The board is asking that replacing the combined storm water and sewage runoffs that drain into the ocean be prioritized.
