Softball Olympic qualifier starts Sunday in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Some of the best softball players in the world have arrived in Surrey in the hopes of earning a spot in next year’s Olympic Games.

Less than a year away from the Summer Games in Tokyo, excitement is building here at home as Softball City in Surrey hosts an Olympic qualifier.

Jenn Salling, who plays for the Canadian Women’s National team, hopes her team can secure a spot at the 2020 Games.

“This is one of the biggest weeks of my life. So to be able to experience that pressure in front of my family and loved ones is obviously super awesome,” she says. “Doing it here in my hometown at Softball City, at a facility that I’ve played at all my life, I’m super ecstatic about the week ahead.”

Team Canada is playing in the tournament with 12 teams from North and South America. The teams are competing for two spots at the Olympics.

The event starts Sunday and runs until Sept. 1. Tickets can purchased online, and day passes will be available at the gate.
