Memorial playground for RCMP officer now open on Vancouver Island

LANGFORD (NEWS 1130) – A new playground is now open on Vancouver Island celebrating the memory of an RCMP officer who was killed by a drunk driver.

Sarah Beckett was killed in the line of duty April 5, 2016 when a drunk driver rammed into her cruiser while speeding. She was 32 years old and a mother of two.

A year after her death, Kenneth Fenton was sentenced to five years and six months in prison.

The City of Langford held the grand opening of the Sarah Beckett Memorial Playground Saturday across from Westhills Stadium.

Beckett’s young sons dipped their hands in cement, marking the site forever in honour of their mother.

There was face-painting and games, and Premier John Horgan and Langford Mayor Steward Young attended for the ribbon cutting ceremony and speeches.

A new memorial plaque was also installed at the playground in Beckett’s honour.

The Rotary of West Shore is accepting online donations for the memorial playground.
