Unsung Hero: Retired Burnaby firefighter helps Nepalese families in need

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – The latest winner in the NEWS 1130 Unsung Hero contest is Eoin White of New Westminster. He was nominated by Barbara Hurst.

The former Burnaby firefighter is the driving force behind “Sherpa Encounters” — a trekking company that takes climbers to the foot of Mount Everest. However, more importantly, he helps provides guidance and assistance to local Nepalese people who are trying to start businesses.

He has been helping many Nepalese families over the many years he has been leading treks,” Barbara explains. “This year he will have taken over 30 groups to Nepal.”

Every time Eoin travels to Nepal, he takes donations of clothing, shoes and sports equipment with him for people in remote villages.

“His commitment to the Nepalese people is heartwarming,” Barbara says. “Last year we took over 300 soccer balls and many jerseys to give kids an experience of fun in many small remote villages. We also gave donations to a remote school who many of the children were orphaned in the 2015 earthquake for shoes, jackets and school supplies.”

Last year, one of his trekking groups included a dentist from New Zealand who provided dental work to those in need, Barbara adds.

Alpine Credits is acknowledging Eoin with $500 and they’re also donating $1,000 to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.
