Conservatives attack Trudeau for not confirming debate invites

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – Conservatives are accusing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of “hiding” and “running” from Canadians because he has not confirmed he will attend two of the four leaders’ debates scheduled ahead of the upcoming federal election.

The party says because of the “broken promise(s)” over his term, he should “stand before Canadians and answer for these failures.”

Brock Harrison, Director of Communications for Leader Andrew Scheer, says Trudeau needs to be held accountable on the political stage.

“He’s asking Canadians to re-elect him. He’s got a lot to answer for over the last four years. The least he can do is show up,” he said.

In a news release published Tuesday, Conservatives questioned why Trudeau won’t commit to attending the other two debates, saying: “he has broken promise after promise to the Canadian people.”

Trudeau’s invitations to attend the debates held by Maclean’s and Citytv in September 12, and the Munk Debate on foreign policy in October 1 are pending. Scheer has confirmed he will be attending both.

The spokesperson for the federal Liberals says the Prime Minister hasn’t made a final decision yet whether to attend two debates, but has confirmed he will participate in two debates held by the Leaders’ Debates Commission on October 7 (English) and October 10 (French).

The federal election will take place on October 21.
