B.C. lumber industry celebrates NAFTA Panel decision in trade dispute with US

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — B.C.’s lumber industry is celebrating an apparent win in the ongoing trade dispute with the U.S.

A NAFTA Panel ruled the U.S. International Trade Commission is wrong to claim the U.S. lumber industry is ‘injured’ by Canadian lumber imports.

Susan Yurkovich, President of the B.C. Lumber Trade Council, said she’s glad to see the ruling.

“In its decision, the NAFTA Panel rightly questioned how the USITC could reach an affirmative determination of injury when the U.S. industry was enjoying the most profitable period in its history without evaluating the industry’s performance in light of the business cycle, particularly in the wake of the recession of 2008-2009,” she said in a release.

The B.C. Lumber Trade Council applauds the ruling but is not happy the panel also said Western Red Cedar won’t be looked at to see if American imports are hurting Canada.
