RCMP arrest man accused of ‘racially abusing,’ assaulting strangers in Burnaby

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) — A man apparently tore through Burnaby hurling racist abuse, assaulting at least one person, spewing sexist comments on a bus, and stealing liquor Thursday afternoon.

Mounties say 45-year-old Raul Miguel Rubio-Alabau has since been arrested and is facing four criminal charges, including assault and uttering threats.

RCMP took a report of a man “racially abusing” and assaulting a stranger in Burnaby at around 4 p.m.

After searching the area they found the man several blocks away, close to a liquor store where staff identified Rubio-Alabau as having stolen alcohol.

Once he was in custody, police received a report from someone concerned about an earlier incident on a bus.

“RCMP received a report from a member of the public who stated that earlier in the afternoon they were on a Transit Bus and had witnessed a man who was allegedly making racist and sexist comments on the bus. Police have since confirmed that this is the same suspect who was arrested earlier in the afternoon,” according to RCMP.

Police say a video of this portion of his short spree is circulating online. Police are using it as part of the investigation.

Rubio-Alabau has been released and is due back in court on Sept. 19.

Court records show he has one prior conviction, for impaired driving in 2005.
