How to spend less on hydro this winter if you’re a renter

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – When temperatures go down, hydro bills go up but there are a few things renters can do to save money.

BC Hydro offers rebates for owners who make their homes more energy efficient.

However, about a third of people rent in Greater Vancouver.

“If you are a renter and you don’t own your own home and you’re not eligible for the rebates there are some little things you can do,” says Susie Rieder, spokesperson for BC Hydro.

She explains hanging one load of laundry a week instead of using the dryer can save you $50 per year. Throwing a dry towel into the dryer when you use it can save you $30.

Meantime, unplugging coffeemakers, phone chargers, and game consoles when your not using them can save you another $50.

“These are just little tips and if you implement them all they can really add up and save you a whole bunch over a year,” she explains.

In a region where one in five households are spending over 50 per cent of their income on rent, every little bit helps.
