Kamloops community raises funds for burnt down school

KAMLOOPS (NEWS 1130) – Thousands of dollars have already been raised to support teachers and staff at a Kamloops elementary school, which burned down on Thursday.

As students and staff get ready for the first full week of school, those attending Parkcrest Elementary won’t have a classroom to return to.

In an effort to help, Sarah Black, a local mother whose two young kinds attend the school, said she launched a GoFundMe campaign.

“I wanted to do a GoFundMe because lots of people right away were ready to start inquiring items, donations, school supplies, things like that,” Black said.

According to Black, equipment and even supplies teachers had been using for years were lost in the fire.

Black said she knows how much money teachers spend out-of-pocket on supplies, which have now all been destroyed.

So far more than $21,000 has been raised by members of the community.

The cause of Thursday’s fire is still unknown.

School staff and fire officials confirmed no one was hurt in the fire.
