NEWS 1130 named finalist for 2019 Jack Webster Award for Best Breaking News

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – NEWS 1130 has been named a finalist for the 2019 Jack Webster Award for Best Breaking News for its coverage of a fiery crash at the Peace Arch in May.

The crash happened May 2, when a two-car crash resulted in a fire, closing the border into Canada for hours. NEWS 1130 sent reporter Monika Gul to the scene, where she filed radio reports, tweeted video and photos, and spoke to witnesses.

Producers, anchors, the traffic team and web editors all contributed to the cross-platform coverage of the crash, including Sonia Aslam, Alison Bailey, Jim Bennie, Matt Coppin, Estefania Duran, Tim James, Toby Kerr, Ria Renouf, and Denise Wong.

The finalists for the 2019 Jack Webster Awards were announced Monday in 13 categories, and the winners will be announced at an awards gala at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver on Nov. 7.

The Websters are the top journalism award in British Columbia.
