Should you wear a suit to your job interview?

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) — Is your suit suitable for a job interview?
As casual dress codes become more popular, some employers still seem to expect a more polished look from interviewees. A new survey from temp agency Accountemps suggests more than one-third (33 per cent) of senior managers who took part say candidates should always wear a formal suit when interviewing for a job.
Yet a similar percentage (37 per cent) say proper interview attire depends on the position or department at the company.
Regardless of the company, they all seemed to agree that how a person dresses for the interview is important.
For finance, insurance and real estate, suits are preferred more frequently (44 per cent), as compared to construction (21 per cent) and retail (21) jobs.
“When it comes to a job interview, the old adage ‘dress for the job you want’ should still apply,” said Koula Vasilopoulos, district president for Accountemps in a press release.
“Use your interview attire as an opportunity to demonstrate that you’ve done your research on the corporate environment and are serious about the role. A polished outfit that aligns with the company’s culture will help to distinguish you as professional, capable and a positive fit with the organization.”
The survey was developed by Accountemps and completed by an independent research firm. More than 600 senior managers at companies with more than 20 employees were surveyed across Canada.
